America's children have lost a hero. For decades, Superman has served as an inspiration to millions of Americans and has served as a symbol and icon of the ideals and principles that make our country great. But that symbol has become a bludgeon for liberal policy makers to beat a message of international unity and socialism into the hearts and minds of readers. When our country's greatest hero becomes the antithesis to its founding scruples, have we all gone mad?
We might as well have, when America's greatest hero decides to turn his back on the United States. In a recent issue of Action Comics, Superman renounced his U.S. citizenship after a clash with the American government. When asked why, the world-renowned superhero responded, "I'm tired of having my actions construed as instruments of U.S. policy," later adding, "Truth, Justice and the American way - it's not enough anymore."
Not enough anymore? Since when were these ideals that could so casually be tossed aside, to be shirked? What higher aim could there possibly be than to fight for freedom and liberty, for democracy, and why is that now something our children need to be ashamed of for believing?
DC Comics editor Dan Didio had this to say regarding the Action Comics issue: "In a short story in ACTION COMICS 900, Superman announces his intention to put a global focus on his never ending battle, but he remains, as always, committed to his adopted home and his roots as a Kansas farm boy from Smallville."
The decision immediately caused controversy. Former presidential contender Mike Huckabee stated on a recent interview with Fox News, "... it is disturbing that Superman who has always been an American icon is now saying I’m not going to be a citizen. I think it’s a part of a bigger trend of Americans almost apologizing for being Americans." Eisner award winner Dave Dorman released in a statement, "I find it very hard to believe that DC Comics has chosen to take Superman–the first and greatest of America’s super heroes and a cultural icon for many generations–and molded him into a piece of political propaganda for this current climate of socialism and world unity."
Superman has become castrated; perverted. This act of anti-patriotic propaganda is the result of an attitude of shame over and contempt for the truths we hold dear to us as American citizens. Where he could have been used to lift this country up out of a slump, to once again inspire millions of citizens to hold dear the mission of democracy and individual freedom, he is instead being twisted into a symbol of socialist and liberal values. The ideals he upheld for generations have been cast aside, and Truth, Justice and the American Way have been replaced by Dishonesty, Corruption, and Global Agendas.
